West Bay School reimagination

News

New tennis and pickle ball courts now front West Bay Road. Ball field construction is scheduled for August. Plans are to build softball, soccer and lacrosse fields and a dual-purpose basketball and street hockey court. A proposed recreation and community center is in the design phase, not yet approved or funded.

Tennis and pickle ball are ready now, are you?

Pickle ball was invented by a family in1965 on Bainbridge Island, WA.

When Congressmen Joel Pritchard, William Bell and Barney McCallum came home from golf one day, the kids were bored and desperate. The men handed the kids table tennis paddles and a wiffle ball, and lowered the net on their badminton court. Pickle ball. Doubles.

To this day it's a great, accessible game for everyone, whether you're 7 or 77.

VILLAGE PLANS NO MORE?

The Town's 2010 Plan was the product of three years of inclusive public participation and village visioning. If you were here, you know it was a lot of work but well worth it. Each unique village mattered. Residents were at the center. Now, this "bottom up" process is suddenly going "top down."

short-term rental BUSINESSES

We love visitors and businesses that benefit from their presence. But Barnstable is proposing a zoning change to allow homes everywhere to be bought by investors and converted to short-term rental lodging. OVA has been working with other villages to  protect residential neighborhoods.

OVA resolution, passed unanimously:

“The Osterville Village Association is opposed to the expansion of current Barnstable zoning to allow short-term rentals in residential zones.”

ACCESSORY DWELLING UNITS

We all want to address the housing crisis. The Town's solution? Eliminate single-family residential zoning and allow "duplexes everywhere," It proposes none of the smart rules other Cape towns have adopted. Investors will be free to outbid local families, build ADUs, collect double revenues, and dominate housing.
